St. Bonaventure is a Franciscan that lived in the 13th century and devoted his entire life to the proclamation of the Gospel and a true embracing of the vows, poverty, chastity and obedience. He is one of the most prolific theologians of his time which led to him being proclaimed as a Doctor of the Church. The saint was also Cardinal - Bishop of Albano and Minister General of the Friars Minor. Born at Bagnorea, Italy in 1221, he had a very close connection with the great St. Francis of Assisi. There is a legend that a young John, Bonaventure’s baptismal name, was brought to St. Francis as an infant when he was near death in order for a cure.
