St. Francis was born on April 7, 1506. He was born in the castle of Xavier. St. Francis was a member of a noble family, but his childhood was disrupted by his father’s death. In 1525, St. Francis went to study at the University of Paris. There he met Ignatius of Loyola who then became his friend. Loyola did his best to convince St. Francis to join him on the same path of devotion. With some support from his friend Ignatius of Loyola, St. Francis dedicated himself to religious service and became one of the founders of the Jesuit order. While waiting in Italy to leave for the Holy Land, St. Francis stayed in a hospital helping those in need. Francis reached Goa, India on May 6, 1542. He was admired by the people there because of his ability to live and work with the poor. St. Francis went street to street asking people to come to his sermon. Wanting more converts, St. Francis continued to travel. On August 15, 1549 St. Francis arrived in Japan to convince people to join the Jesuit Order. Some Portuguese merchants found St. Francis when he breathed his last breath. They buried him in a
Box partially filled with unslaked lime. His body is still on display in Goa in a silver casket.

The next place St. Francis visited for missionary work was China. He was not able to reach the borders because they were taken over by foreigners. Before he could find a way inside, he became sick with an illness. He died on the island of Canton on December 3, 1552 at the age of 46. St. Francis’ body was taken to Goa, where it is on public display for locals and tourist to see. Even though he died at a young age he still accomplished many things. I admire St. Francis because he traveled the world so he could help people. I can be more like St. Francis by helping people like he helped people. Some examples are that I can pray for those in need and give money to charity. St. Francis Xavier symbol is a crucifix and he is the patron saint of Catholic Missions.
