My personal opinion on whether or not Joe Paterno should have been fired, have everything taken away from him, including all of his wins and the statute in front of the stadium taken down. Despite the fact, I do not think that Joe should have been fired at all. He did what he was supposed to do, and reported the incident to the next higher upper. Although, could he had done more, of course he could have. Paterno even stated in the film when talking to the bibliographer “I wished I had done more”.
Court documents indicate that the five are fighting the chargers, but have since been expelled from Phi Gamma delta which has a policy prohibiting hazing. The defendants include Richard Eugene Markwalter II, Hunter Lee Wagner, and mark Allen Powers II who are all 20 and from Huntsville; John Patrick Buckley, 21, of Houston; and Colter K. Anderson, 22, of Dallas.
Tim Curley and Gary Schultz were also charged with one count of felony perjury and one count of failure to report abuse allegations. Curley and Schultz, both resigned from their positions with the university on November 7, 2011 after their arraignment. On November 11, 2011, McQueary, who was now the football team’s assistant receiver’s coach, was placed on indefinite administrative leave. Sandusky denied all the charges, stating that the only thing he did wrong was showered with the boys. On December 7, 2011 Sandusky was arrested on additional counts of child sex abuse, raising the number of victims from eight to ten.
On November 4, 2011, Jerry Sandusky, former defensive coordinator for Penn State, was accused of sexually abusing eight children during his time at Penn State. More news followed saying that officials at Penn State knew about the incidents, but failed to report any of it to law enforcement. Jerry Sandusky was with Penn State for a total of 32 years. In that time, his actions outside of football didn’t go completely unnoticed. In 1998, an 11-year-old boy told his mother that Sandusky showered with him and may have engaged in some inappropriate contact.
The Sandusky scandal had a huge impact on Penn State. There were many areas of the University that were affected. Management was definitely affected. According to Crandall, W., Parnell, J. & Spillan, J. (2013), there were four management level members of the University who were either fired or forced out. It included president Graham Spanier, senior vice president of finance and business Gary Schultz, athletic director Timothy Curley, and legendary football coach Joe Paterno.
Those decisions harmed the University and more importantly changed the lives of several young boys forever. Jerry Sandusky is in prison now, and head coach Joe Paterno died a few months after he was fired from his coaching position. The football program
This young man got three rejections from the University of Notre Dame, but he still stayed optimistic and full of hope. It wasn’t until his fourth attempt, which was his final year of transfer eligibility, that he got accepted to this prestigious university. Once accomplishing one of his dreams, he was onto the next in just short matter of time. Joining the Fighting Irish Football team.
“After his retirement, he continued to have access to the Penn state campus athletic facilities because of his status as an emeritus professor” (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). In 1998 a parent reported that her 11 year old son had showered with Sandusky in the Lasch Building. Her claims were reported to the University Police Department, who in turn ordered Sandusky not to continue with these actions. “At this point , all four Penn State officials – Spanier, Schultz, Curley, and Paterno – were informed of the police report and proceeded as if the event were now behind them” (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2014). However in 2001, Mike McQueary witnessed Sandusky in action with a 10 year old boy and reported to Coach Paterno.
Jerry Sandusky joined the coaching staff in 1969 and retired in 1999. However, after his retirement, he continued to have access to the Penn State campus athletic facilities. This crisis that involved Sandusky was one of the worst in the history of college sports. In addition, the scandal also produced the harshest penalties by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The crisis began with two events that happened over ten years ago.
They received only ten minutes of recognition, while the football team were commemorated with banners and assemblies. With my own observation, I can say that it is noticeable that the football team receives more recognition than what other sports, and the “nerds” get. Very few people in school would actually pay attention or attend any of the debates, competitions, and other sports. I would both agree and disagree with Penrod in his argument.
Throughout the history of the United States of America, there have been various political affairs. One of the most famous, however, would have to be what is known as the “Watergate” scandal. This scandal began on June 17, 1972, when five individuals were arrested for attempted burglary at the Democratic National Committee headquarters. The five men involved were: Virgilio Gonzalez, Bernard Barker, James W. McCord Jr., Eugenio Martinez, and Frank Sturgis. All of these individuals were members of U.S. President Richard Nixon’s Committee to Re-elect the President (CRP).
Athletes who play football or basketball are at a higher risk of career ending injuries. These two sports are the hardest on an athletes body. Only one out of twenty-five college athletes go pro, so why put your body at risk when you don’t receive anything for doing that and your chances of going pro are slim? A lot of these student athletes are stressed out because of schoolwork participating in a college sport. This is just another reason that these athletes deserve to be
A lot of sports recruits come from the inner city, country or a humble environment. Going to college is a completely new and different experience. A large portion of players are trying to adjust in the classroom and feel inferior in more ways than we care to realize. Many of the students at major universities in the United States typically come from families that have incomes that are above the national average. These players are asked to come to the college’s where they are not socially equal but they are expected to feel good about the situation and themselves.
Also, he shows that it is okay to admit student athletes because they learn to be discipline, respect, and leadership based on being on a team environment. He does have a fallacy of a False Analogy because he states that the author of the first essay knows nothing about football because he attendee home games and the author of the second essay would play and he was in this environment while in school. He thinks because student athletes put a lot of their time in to school and football that they should be getting a stipend with their scholarship because they put more hours into college work with all of their training and practicing and with their studies. He also, does not contradict
Look Back The event that will be discussed in this paper is my resident’s refusal to eat his breakfast and my ineffective response to this situation. Elaborate This event that did not occur with my primary resident, but a resident with whom I spent a lot of time with regardless, and who had a mild form of dementia.
