What, if any, faculty member, program or department had an impact on your decision to study abroad? Please elaborate. The department that has influenced me the most during my time at Stanford is the Chicano studies department. I have met with various professors from this department and engaged in truly incredible conversations regarding the cultures of these countries and the problems they are currently facing. In specific, Furthermore, being a part of Mecha student group in Stanford has provided me with huge insights into the problems that communities in the US and other countries are experiencing. As someone who grew really close to his community back in Mexico, making sure that other communities were not suffering became a huge passion for me. Therefore, during my first year in this school I became involved in various groups that supported and stood up for communities throughout California and the US as a whole. I hope that by attending this program I will be able to get a new and improved persperctive into the problems that people throughout the world are experiencing. I’ll be able to sit in my chicano studies classes and truly grasp the intricate concepts and problems being discussed. Furthermore, by communicating face to face with people from Chile I will be able to develop efficient and friendly ways to truly help the communities with the most important problems that they are facing. I have heard a lot of people critizicing engineers due to the ideology that they are solely motivated by financial topics. Nevertheless, my true desire to become an engineer is to have the ability to produce new and novel ways to help communities that might otherwise experience devastating problems that could easily be solveable with a simple machine. I truly believe that being a member of such amazing groups has provided me with unique perspectives into the problems that people in US and other Latino-american countries are experiencing. I have been able to meet and talk with public figures that are currently fighting to obtain equality and provide various communities in Latin America with a better life style for this and future generations. Furthermore, the long talks that I have had with my friend Maria regarding Chile and its culture has provided me with key insight into how native people truly experience their own country.
