The current problem being faced is overpopulation, both of these events portray potential dilemmas that the modern world may face. The town in the Lorax and Easter Island ran completely out of natural resources. In the Lorax, only one individual was responsible for the downfall of the environment. On Easter Island, both animals and humans contributed to the destruction.
Mr. Ray is a great example of a free-thinking American author. Though this book was written in the late nineteen nineties, the message and statements still have the same impact on today's readers, as it did over a decade ago. If possible, this book could have more of an impact in today's world, because environmentalism has snuck its way into the top issues of the United States. On June 2-14, 1992, the United Nations Conference on Environment (UNCED) was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The lorax, Kaffir Boy and Juan Enriquez’s TED Talk can all be connected through one major theme: bullying. The lorax includes the main themes greediness and selfishness. Kaffir Boy includes many instances of peer pressure, racism and violence. Juan Enriquez’s Ted Talk mentions lifecode, which basically depicts the reasoning of changing natural life into synthetic life. First of all, the lorax is a poem written by Dr. Suess.
It is true that if humorists didn't say some of the things they do that they probably would never be said. However, that may be for the best. Some of the things that humorists say are offensive and rude when the possible point to them is to be funny. de Botton challenges the idea that the goal of a humorist is not to entertain, but to proceed with impunity messages that might be considered dangerous or impossible to state directly. Different humorists have different goals.
The Lorax is about a Human named the “Once-ler” who chopped down all the trees to make Thneeds. The Once-ler for money and fame The Once-ler wanted more money so he went and destroyed the whole forest and build factories because of greed. This saw in all the wildlife evacuating and being killed. The Once-ler realises his mistake and gives a seed to a young boy to plant the last tree. “I the Once-ler felt sad as I watched them go, but business must grow, regardless of the crummies in tummies you know.”
In 2006, former Vice President of the United States but now an environmentalist activist name Al Gore expresses the issue about preserving our Earth. He attempts to appeal to environmentalist at a universal lecture hall and to non-environmentalist around the world by making the lecture into a documentary titled An Inconvenient Truth. Gore combines the use of visuals with rhetorical devices to achieve his purpose of bringing awareness to the effects of global warming. Through the duration of the documentary Al Gore credibility is lionized.
Take Loki’s role in Baldur’s death for example, Loki was able to use Baldur’s amusing “not dying horribly party trick” game to kill him with the most insignificant and tiny thing in the nine realms the, mistletoe. An act truly deserving of Loki’s mischievous label, in a way wickedly hilarious. Humor has always been used throughout history especially in dire, weird, unfortunate and unique situations to help the audience relate to the characters but also allows us for that moment, maybe to understand the multifaceted, complex and sometimes rigid nature of the writer. In Thor’s crossing dressing quest to retrieve his stolen hammer, humor is used to spark the audience’s imagination yet provide a light hearted moment. These intricately placed elements of humor are used in all sorts of literature pieces, even the dwarf getting kicked into the fireplace yet it serves no purpose does make you
The reason why I am reviewing and recommending this book is because I think it brings to light important issues such as the state of our ocean, different perspectives between eco warriors and hunters, and that it shows what people are really capable of.
Equally important, satire and comedy address societal flaws as well as serving as a mechanism of persuasion. Cognitive neuroscientist and author, Scott Weems’ suggests humor “is it’s a great way for us to have evolved so we don’t have to hit each other with sticks” (O’Hara 105). Physical dismantling of social inadequacies, such as riots, are not as persuasive as the subtlety of satirical humor. Humor deflates animosity and provides room for contemplation. The objectification of women seems a terribly outdated societal norm, yet beauty pageants remain as a staple in our culture, and engage in objectification.
In 1962, Rachel Carson, author of the book, “Silent Spring” paints the image of a disgusting world filled with contamination that is not too far away for the citizens of America in 1962. A world filled with waste and chemicals due to the lack of knowledge that humankind has about the environment would hurt the air, Earth, rivers, and seas, causing both the environment and the human race to be in danger. Carson idealizes change in the environment through use of an abundance of rhetorical devices. Carson utilizes devices such as, imagery, logos, pathos through childhood, compare contrast organization, and shifts in persona. By using rhetorical devices, Carson reveals the truth about the contamination and waste in the environment.
“Why comedy matters” fills logical connection in persuading how important comedy is, owes emotional concepts and leads viewers believe comedy do important for individual, groups or the whole society. 1. “Eastern Philosophy-Confucius” puzzles audiences in three fields. First, lacking ethical evidence to show Confucius is important. Second, disordering logical message represent in this video.
Comedies often provides laughter and entertainment while presenting social, political, cultural, philosophical, and theological ideas and problems. Within the comedy genre, satire presents itself in a form of sarcasm, irony and humor. It is the combination of entertainment and critique to criticize the ignorance of the person or society. It has three elements: entertainment, critical reflection to awaken the audience and to address issues and questions. It does not seek to harm, but it seeks the truth and its purpose is to create a reform purpose.
There are many functions of joking. Comedy, especially satire, is intended to be a reflection of society and ourselves. Every person or group of people have their vices and virtues, and comedy takes these traits and emphasizes them to make a statement in a humorous way. This is a great method of reducing power imbalances, painting a benevolent perception of people, and expressing currently tabooed opinions. In comedy, powerful political figures such as George W. Bush can be represented as an everyday-man, as he often was when he was portrayed by Will Farrell on Saturday Night Live.
One of the most valuable aspects of personality is humor – we value one’s sense of humor and make friends often based on finding certain things funny. But how and why do we consider things to be funny at all? Human beings have strived to uncover fundamental truths about human nature for centuries – even millennia – but humor itself is still yet to be pinpointed. Henri Bergson is only one of many who has attempted this feat, and his essay Laughter: an essay on the meaning of the comic from 1911 breaks down comedy into what he believes to be its essential forms and origins. While Bergson makes many valid points, Charlie Chaplin’s film Modern Times that was brought to screens only twenty years later seems to contradict many of Bergson’s theories, while Bergson seems to contradict even himself over the course of his essay.
Another positive for freedom of speech for comedians is that the jokes made can lighten the mood of the subject. A comedians function in society is to challenge authority, and talk about subjects that may be unacceptable (Hartsell). Comedians are expected to go too far, but when they do, they are disapproved for it. Although, the audiences may only laugh at a joke because of how awkward it is going to be if no one did. “People like to mask their feelings due to not wanting others to really know how they feel—so people may laugh in times of nervousness because they are trying to balance their anxious feelings” (Kaminski).
