What is stem cell research? Stem cell research is research conducted on the potential action stem cells have to regenerate into something else in the body. Although most of the research conducted shows the positive outcomes stem cell research has to offer, negative issues are more prevalent. It uses embryonic stem cells to help cure a disease or make a new organ. Even though usage of embryonic stem cells seems to have positive outcomes there is a large cost to it for the user of stem cell research and the embryo. With it being expensive, leaves the low-income society in disadvantage of utilizing the new findings of the research. Since there being “millions of people lack[ing] health insurance coverage and millions more hav[ing] inadequate coverage, many patients are unable to benefit from the clinical interventions developed through past research efforts” (Dresser, p.336). The same is expected from adding stem cell research. It is not going to help in the cure of the abundant amount of diseases already present, if the need for money and health insurance is still prevalent all around. Spending time and money on stem cell research will not benefit but hurt many. Dresser states that by “expanding access to health care would assist a currently disadvantaged group of people” (Dresser, p.336). This intervention of improving and providing health insurance is more efficient than research on stem cells, since stem cell research has an inflated cost. Dresser acclaims that the “lack of access to basic health care, clean water, and other public health services produces high death rates in poor countries. In this situation, small amounts of money can make huge contributions to improving and extending human lives” (Dresser, p.336). Changing common things like the ones Dresser stated will improve the health of society with a lower cost than stem cell
