Stem Cell Research Argumentative Essay

For as long as humans have existed, ideal health continues to remain vitally important for a sufficient life. As new medical discoveries increase through generations, humans result in being healthier. Stem cell research, which is a fairly new field, examines to advance and lengthen human life. (2)The possibility of stem cells devolving health makes it beneficial to the human race. Stem cells posses the possibility to arise into hundreds of different cells in the human body thus leading to us referring to it as undifferentiated cells. The body is made up of roughly around 200 different types of specialized cells such as nerve cells, skin cells, muscle cells and fat cells, which all generate from stem cells.

Every new cell that is created in our body has the choice of becoming a stem cell or a normal cell. A stem cell is a cell that is not yet specialized. The process of specialization is called differentiation and once the differentiation pathway of a stem cell has been decided, it can no longer develop into another type of cell. Stem cells have dissimilar levels of potential. (3) A stem cell that can become every type some types of cells is called multipotent. Stem cells are found in a verity of different places such as the early embryo, the fetus, the placenta and more. They are accountable for generating new tissues; furthermore once growth is complete, stem cells are responsible for repair and regeneration of damaged and aging tissues. The cells that are generated in our body could convert into any organ-specific cell and then it would create the organ.(1) Scientists would take the stem cells in the earliest stage of life and would save it. Stem cells under special experimental conditions could turn into a tissue or organ- specific cells that have the characteristics and the functions of this organ. Hence, stem cells are used to repair or replace damaged cells thus treating an array of common diseases such as Alzheimer’s …show more content…

For starters one way is to use stem cells to regenerate or regrow diseased parts of the brain. Moreover another approach is to use stem cells such as mesenchyme stem cells (MSC) not as rebuilding agents, yet rather as healers of the existing brain parenchyma. Thus MSC could heal instead than replace neurons. Another possible approach to stem cell therapies might be to use certain types of stem cells to deliver proteins called neurotrophins to the brain. In the healthy brain, neurotrophins support the growth and survival of neurons, but in Alzheimer’s patients neurotrophin production is low. Neural stem cells produce neurotrophins and so might offer a route to solving this problem. To test this theory, scientists bred mice with the key symptoms and characteristics of Alzheimer’s, such as memory impairment. They then injected neural stem cells into the brains of the mice and observed some improvement in memory. Further studies are now taking place to understand this effect, but the approach has not yet been tested in human patients. (6) Finally a fourth concept is using stem cells such as MSC as drug delivery agents. For example, instead of giving Crenezumab or some other drug systemically, it is possible that stem cells could directly deliver the drug within the brain from cell-to-cell more
