Stem Cells A stem cell has the ability to produce an offspring of itself, or to turn into another cell that your body needs. “Stem cells lack the specialized functions of liver cells, kidney cells, and other cells of the body, and yet these cells develop into specialized cells” (Jones 16). Scientists have had the interest in stem cells for a long time. This is because it can repair tissues, repair organs, and different diseases. The stem cells are illegal in some states. This is because you are destroying an embryo. People believe by destroying an embryo you’re hurting another human being. Debate on this still goes on. There are some concerns that have been found with stem cells. The stem lines in a stem cell can have a mutation which can cause the person to have tumors. Another problem to resolve is that if you use the patient’s own plant cell it can cause tissue rejection which is harmful for humans. There can also be a complication when transplanting bone marrow.
