Stem Cells A stem cell has the ability to produce an offspring of itself, or to turn into another cell that your body needs. “Stem cells lack the specialized functions of liver cells, kidney cells, and other cells of the body, and yet these cells develop into specialized cells” (Jones 16). Scientists have had the interest in stem cells for a long time. This is because it can repair tissues, repair organs, and different diseases. The stem cells are illegal in some states. This is because you are destroying an embryo. People believe by destroying an embryo you’re hurting another human being. Debate on this still goes on. There are some concerns that have been found with stem cells. The stem lines in a stem cell can have a mutation which can cause the person to have tumors. Another problem to resolve is that if you use the patient’s own plant cell it can cause tissue rejection which is harmful for humans. There can also be a complication when transplanting bone marrow. Bone marrow is caused by white blood cells. The white blood cells can sometimes attack causing the patient to have graft versus host. Bone Marrow treats Leukemia (a type of cancer) this is when your white blood cells function abnormally and no longer protects your immune system. This can be very dangerous for you because it protects the whole body. The bone marrow migrates through your whole body and it creates white blood cells that will function normally in your body. Bone Marrow can be harmful in some ways. If the white blood cells recognize that the bone marrow is foreign it will start to attack the cell.
