In Stephen King’s words: “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There’s no way around these two things that I’m aware of, no shortcut.” This quote sums up what ENG is all about; reading and writing. There is no short cut to improving ones reading and writing skills. There are many things that were learned in ENF, but only 3 were important: enhancing vocabulary, analyzing readings, and writing college level essays. The first important thing that was learned in ENF was how to enhance our vocabulary. By increasing ones vocabulary you increase knowledge. There were two methods that were shown in class on how to remember new words. The first one was flash cards that you looked at when you had a spare moment. The second method was where you had a single sheet of paper that was divided into four columns. In a short amount of time you had to write the word, and definition in the first column; and draw an image that reminded you of the word in the second column. Then repeat in the next two columns. Three key figures that was taught to help analyze reading were writing patterns, implied main idea, and SQ3R. While reading writings, we were shown how to identify the authors writing patterns, and how to find the implied main idea. From there, we were shown SQ3R, also known as the reading process. First, you would survey the reading, which is your prior knowledge about the reading. Then, you read. While reading, you are asking yourself questions, what does it say, what does it not say? After reading, try to recite the questions you were asking throughout the reading. Then review the book to help you memorize it better so that it stays in your long-term memory.
