Most of the time, stereotyping a racial group causes tension and brings about negative and damaging effects. Almost all Americans have heard the stereotype “all Asian Americans are smart”. The model minority stereotype is the cultural expectation placed on Asian Americans as group to be smart (naturally good at science and math), wealthy, and hardworking”.
Stereotypes affects a human’s perception on a daily basis. Simply just walking down a street, and looking at the people who pass you, perceptions are being made about those people based on stereotypes that were formed early in a child’s life. Psychologist Paul Bloom speaks about how stereotypes can be rational times. You wouldn’t ask your grandma to help move furniture because you wouldn’t think she could be capable of lifting the heavy objects. But just because a thought may be rational doesn’t mean it is moral or humane.
Over the past week, I was tasked to choose between one of two articles that all of the incoming freshman at Union County College in preparation for the up and coming school year. When society as a whole refuses to see people as a unique and instead forces them to fit into a stereotypical mold, humanity dehumanizes itself and becomes unable to recognize individual genius. James R. Moore, the author of “Shattering Stereotypes: A Lesson Plan for Improving Student Attitudes and Behavior toward Minority Groups” expresses this issue: “Walter Lippmann, who introduced the term stereotype into the American vocabulary, stated ‘for the most part we do not first see, and then define, we define first and then see’” (Moore 36). Because of the complexity of stereotypes, they materialize in day-to-day life much more often than expected, and their negative effects produce more harm than commonly comprehended. Joshua Aronson of New York University sums up this concept by stating that “human intellectual performance is far more fragile than we customarily think; it can rise and fall depending on the social context” (16).
Multiple tests have been conducted by psychologists to determine what roles race can play in intelligence. In one such test the Army Mental Tests, administered to 1.75 million American recruits during World War I, it was concluded that there were inborn racial differences between whites and blacks, and among various European “races.” Social psychologists have provided alternative and more complex explanations for the differences in traditional races. Experimental stereotype threat research conducted by Claude Steele is of particular significance (Race and Psychology 3). It is based on the validated finding that the threat of being negatively stereotyped leads to underperformance in accordance with that stereotype.
A picture tells a thousand words, yet in the present time, we use a simple profile picture and simple post from social media to judge another person and to determine the type of person he or she is. For instance, a person can be quick to judge another person based on individual’s appearance, attitude, and background.
