Many books include single stories that create one sided worlds filled with stereotypes for their characters. Often the author uses the book as a progression from the characters believing the single stories and stereotypes whole-heartedly to when they learn to see that single stories often do not show the whole truth, are always one sided and to reject the stereotypes. A few examples of these books are Atonement, The Book Thief, Marked and To Kill A Mockingbird. Atonement follows Briony Tallis' life from the age of 10 onwards. The first part of the book revolves around two days in 1934. It starts off with Death saying that he had encountered a girl called Liesel three times: once on a train, a second time after a plane crash and a third time after a bombing. He then tells the story of Liesel's life and how she was with her brother when he died on a train, where she stole a book from someone. She was then placed with a foster family in Germany during World War II. She gets a job as a laundry deliverer for the Hermann family where one day she gets invited into the study. A boy named Max, a Jewish boy, is able to make his way to the town where Liesel lives. Max's dad knew Liesel's dad from their time in the army during World War I. Liesel's foster parents hide Max in their basement. The Hermann family tell Liesel they do not need her services anymore, angering her. She decides to steal books out of the Hermann family's study. After a bombing, Liesel discovers a pilot whose plane had crashed. Later in her life, Max gets taken away by the Nazi's. While Liesel was working on her book that she was writing in the basement of their house, there was a bombing and Liesel's family and friends die. After the war, Max and Liesel get reunited. Liesel moves to Australia and starts a family for herself there. When she dies and Death meets her he gives her back the book she wrote all those years ago named The Book Thief.
