Culture is defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music, and the arts. So how can someone's cultural background affect what they perceive to be beautiful? Well, what is perceived to be beautiful in one's society may not be considered to be so in another. Society heavily dictates what is perceived to be attractive from personality, fashion, and physical attractiveness.While there should be a plethora of diversity in a world where every person comes from a different cultural background, there is the lack of diversity in the world of beauty; this lack of diversity causes adolescents and women to create unrealistic images and standards of beauty. With such a precise definition of what beauty is, it doesn't leave a lot of room for diversity. A study conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) found that there were about 205,000 cosmetic surgeries conducted on adolescents 18 and under in 2007, compared to about 60,000 in 1997 (Jennifer,2008).This is a result of an increased effort in teenage girls trying to fit in with the latest beauty trend. Most teenagers going in for cosmetic surgery are changing some of their cultural features. A study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons found that more than 3.2 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed on ethnic patients in 2013, that is an increase of about 243 percent since 2000 (American Society of Plastic Surgeons). Over 25 percent of those all those patients were Asian, Black, or Hispanic (ASPS).With this upsurge in plastic surgery amongst adolescents and women of ethnicity, the occurrence of plastic surgery has increased among ethnic patients as they are becoming more aware of easy fixes for their skin tones and facial features (ASPS).The media's coverage of plastic surgery has helped erase the stigma that is associated with plastic surgery, therefore permitting those who need to change their physical features to blend in with the latest beauty standard to turn to plastic
