What is a steroid? It is a large class of organic compounds containing four rings of carbon atoms. They include a lot hormones, alkaloids, and vitamins. Some steroids people use include testosterone, estradiol, dietary lipid cholesterol, and dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory drug. Common brand names are Androsterone, oxandrin, dianabol, deca durabolin, and equipoise. Steroids are not meant to be used to increase a person’s athletic performance, but they are prescribed to for asthma, allergies, and for many diseases or sicknesses. What affects do steroids have on the body? Using steroids has a very negative effect on the body. I personally don’t think it is a bad idea to test the athletes, but I also don’t think that it is necessary. It’s only high school, but when you get to the college, or professional level, yes, they should absolutely be tested. I surveyed three adults, and one student and these are the results I got. Adult number 1 said, “Yes, if they are using performance enhancing drugs it could cause them to have a heart attack. It affects all aspects. If the athletes are more likely to get tested, the more likely they aren’t going to use the drugs.” Adult number 2 said, “No, the objective of a sport is for entertainment, if steroids improve your performance then they should be able to do it. Not only that but the cost to test all athletes is way too expensive.” Adult number 3 said, “Yes, I feel that these high school athletes should be tested. It’s very harmful to their bodies, and their are many health risks. There will be less problems if drugs aren’t involved.” Student 1 said, “ Yes because it could not only harm the player, but other players on the field too.
