Teens and adults alike in the 21st century are far more invested in technology and modern advances than in the rest of society. Physical activity and recreation are but a forethought. One would rather send an emoji or a snapchat than speak face to face or even make a simple phone call. Modern technology, while upgrading our social lives, is downgrading our social skills, manners, and interactions with the real world. When such societal atrocities occur, the people fight back with art. Steve Cutts exhibits his enamouring portrayal of today’s societal addiction to technology through the use of contrast, colour, and emotion. Orange, pink, purple, and red hues portraying the warm light of the sun and the world around them starkly contrast the movement of the people towards the greys, browns, and blues of their technological darkness. Each greyish-blue person, mindless in their pursuit, representing the zombie-like tendencies we as a society have towards our mobile technology. The white light radiating from the devices seems to be a connotation of false light, luring the mindless away from the true orange light. Cutts’s work screams to our emotions, enticing them with powerful imagery. Placing actual products within the work brings an eerie sense of realism to the piece. The never-ending march of the mindless stirs our rebellious spirits, causing us to believe that we are not one of them; when, in fact, we belong to this horde. The agonising expression on their faces tells a story of first-time use addiction, leading to a life-long struggle with the drug that is social media. We, as a society, are addicted to mobile technology and social media. Cutts conveys this in his unnamed work.
