Steve Jobs, one of the most successful businessmen to ever live, once said, “Your time is limited, so don 't waste it living someone else 's life. Don 't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people 's thinking. Don 't let the noise of others ' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition” (qtd. in Dubey n.pag.). One could say that he was so successful because he was not afraid to stand up against the masses who said he could not. It is crucial that every person finds their own voice in this overwhelming society and are not silenced by tradition, for change cannot occur unless we question a greater power. If Mayella would not have lied, her father would have beat, hit and abused her both physically and emotionally. Due to the physical bruises on Mayella, Atticus was able to grasp the idea that she was being hurt and made him question what really happened that night. Some could say she also lied because of what everyone in the town would say. When Mayella was not honest, the community could not understand the real incident, which caused the society to move backwards during this racially tense time period. Similarly, another major character in, To Kill a Mockingbird, was Dolphus Raymond. This specific event was quickly forgotten as if it had never happened. It was not until many years later until someone finally started informing others about this tragic period. By learning and understanding past events like this one, the world can change and make sure that these devastating acts will hopefully never happen again. As the community gains knowledge, we also need to gain strength to stand up to fight back when an uprising begins. Unfortunately, a very recent event occurred that caused a certain group of people to feel afraid. As described, some reporters made it known to the public that a Jewish cemetery was recently vandalized: “A vandal or vandals toppled and damaged more than 100 headstones [...] "’I think that the violence sent a shockwave through the St. Louis Jewish community”” (Paul and Hanna n.pag.).
