The movie, Still Alice, is about a successful linguistics professor acquiring the incredibly disheartening disease known as Alzheimer’s. When she is diagnosed, she is only fifty years old and the disease is robbing her of all of the memories she has worked so hard for over the years. The disease begins destroying her memory and cognitive skills resulting in memory loss and confusion. Throughout the course of this movie, many of Alice’s behaviors can be explained with psychological principles such as impairment of her implicit memory, the inability to use dual processing, and effortful processing using rehearsal. Alice had all of her family come over for a Christmas dinner that she was cooking up by herself like she has always done in the past. While she was preparing the meal, she tried improving her memory skills by writing three words up on a little chalkboard that was in her kitchen. Once she wrote the words up on the chalkboard, she covered them with a piece of paper and then set a timer. She would then continue preparing the meal for the family while she was trying to remember the three words that were up on the board. Once the timer went off, she would recall the three words that she had written on the board, and then remove the paper from covering the words to see if she was correct. If she were to encounter any other distractions while she was trying to remember the words, it would result in her not being able to properly memorize them. This is why she asked her children to go sit down at the table and allow her to concentrate on making dinner
