In “The Interlopers” and “The Necklace,” the irony is situational. The way it is situational is when the story ends something unexpected happening, like in “The Interlopers” how wolves came instead of their men, and in “The necklace” when Monsieur Loisel and Madame Loisel spent 10 years to pay off a necklace that cost 36,000 francs when the original cost only 500. In these 2 stories, it shows that irony leaves the readers wanting more, and it gives us a little bit of a surprise. Irony may leave the readers wanting more. I know of this for the fact that I have felt this when I read “The Interlopers” and “The Necklace” I was left wanting to know more and what happened after the story ended.
This is also an example of situational irony because the reader doesn’t expect that a good wife such as Mary Maloney would murder someone, especially not her husband. This adds suspense because the reader now has to wonder how she’ll get away with her crime, or if she even will. Another obvious example of irony occurs when the investigators can’t find the murder weapon. This is because the reader knows that the weapon, a leg of lamb, was in the oven the entire time. For example, on page 11, the investigators talk about the murder weapon; one of them says “Personally, I think it’s right here on the premises” (11).

The poem “Ordinary Life” by Barbara Crooker features several instances of Irony as the speaker found comfort in an ordinary day. The narrator was relaxed and happy without her children hindering her ability to do very ordinary tasks, yet her children are well behaved. She “cleaned out kitchen cupboards” and “drank ginger tea”. Ironically, she found solace in everyday tasks without her kids, yet her children appeared uncharacteristically cooperative “without a murmur remembering their books, lunches, gloves”. In addition, The speaker was able to have “conversation” free of “bickering or pokes” and her children “drift[ed] into homework.”
Many of this is reflected in the story The Ransom of Red Chief. We never really saw any verbal irony in this passage. We did however, see situational irony. An example of situational irony we observed in this story is how we expected Red Chief’s father to react to the kidnapping. We think he would be like any parent and be absolutely terrified that his child is gone.
Roald Dahl used his skills to write a fabulous story that has foreshadowing and a lot of irony. In this short story there seems to be a lot of irony. The author did an excellent job with it making it super intense and interesting. For example “Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head (5).”
In the beginning of the novel Holden is back with his parents because he references it and in a way uses pre tense but it seems as though holden is talking as the story is actually happening. The significance of Holden referencing David copperfield is that it means the something bad happen to him becuase the david copperfield he’s talking about is the comedian. When Holden left the equipment on the subway it shows that he is not very responsible and doesn't want to take the blame for leaving the things on the subway and he kind of ignores it.

In the short story, “The Open Window”, author Saki (H.H. Munro) uses multiple types of irony to elaborate the sense of the mood to readers. Saki uses dramatic irony, verbal irony, and situational irony to show the differences between the characters’ mindsets and personalities. Using different types of irony in stories makes one able to better understand multiple viewpoints of the characters. Dramatic irony is when the reader comprehends what is going on in the story or knows something the characters do not. An example of dramatic irony is shown in context where Mrs. Sappleton waits for her family to come home.

It can create the unexpected twist at the end of a story or anecdote that gets people laughing or crying. Verbal irony is intended to be a humorous type of irony.
