Antitrust laws are designed to promote competition and prevent monopolies, which can harm consumers by limiting choices and increasing prices (Federal Trade Commission, 2021). Under these laws, companies are prohibited from engaging in certain activities that could lead to anti-competitive behavior (Federal Trade Commission, 2021). For example, companies cannot negotiate to fix prices or divide markets with their competitors (Bindra, 2018). They are also not allowed to merge with or acquire other companies if such actions significantly reduce competition in the relevant market (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2021).
