The Vitenam was one of the biggest blunders in American history. The war split America in two, and tensions in the country were high. It seemed as though everyone in America was mad at their government for some reason. The Vietnam war affected the United States of America socially, economically, and politically. Socially, the Vietnam war caused a split between the rich and the poor.
General Westmoreland claims that at first American troops were not meant to be in direct combat but the realization that Vietnam was not going to fix itself occurred. Tactics had to change the environment of Vietnam was different than any war in the recent past. American troops had to be trained to be able to effectively fight. Westmoreland had to know that fighting the Vietnamese was not going to be easy or fast that is why he called for better training programs. In soldiers letter to home they describe why American troops have to be present in Vietnam.

Joining organizations at school are a very common subject to be conversed around college, even before college. There will be constant rambles from advisors and other upper-classmen to join clubs and organizations as a first-year student in college. Throughout college, this type of concern is everyone generally informed of. Even through all the important reminders and advices that students receive from others, there are still many students who are refusing to execute the first step toward joining an organization due to lack of motivation, knowledge, or courage. However, VSA, otherwise known as Vietnamese Student Association, is not just any typical organization on campus, it’s a family.
From 1955 to 1975 the brutal Vietnam War was fought, causing enormous soldier and civilian casualties. The United States, much to the eventual chagrin of the public, was incredibly active in this conflict, deploying over 400,000 soldiers during the war’s span. The justification for this sustained engagement in Vietnam by the government was complex, as was the dissent conveyed by the very soldiers fighting in the war. In the documentary-style films “Why Vietnam” and “Letters Home from Vietnam” two very distinct interpretations of the Vietnam War are painted in an attempt to educate the American public on the value of the war. Produced by the United States Department of Defense in 1965, “Why Vietnam” aims to educate the general public on America’s
The draft was last used back in the Vietnam War to provide more men to fight in the war against the communist North, leading to problems back at home (Moody). While some say the draft was patriotic and brought the country together, the draft was unconstitutional, weakened the military, and weakened the economy. With the Constitution being the law of the land, forcing fathers and sons to leave their families to fight a bloody, insect-infected, swampy war or any other war they did not want to fight violates every citizens personal liberties (National Constitution Center). In other words, the draft imposes on citizens basic rights. The draft has been also unfair to low income families as “high-income families who could avoid being drafted by going to college or finding a slot in a stateside National Guard unit” (Moody).
Were drafted American soldiers intimidated by guerilla warfare during the Vietnam war during the period 1957-1965? Summary of evidence There was definitely a sense of fear and intimidation amongst drafted American soldiers during the Vietnam war during 1957 to 1965. I have concluded from various primary sources that American soldiers were often unaware of what the Vietnam War possessed. Due to this there was a rise of fear and apprehension. In Black Herbert’s ‘The other ascent into the unknown’, the soldier’s hesitance to fight in the Vietnam War is evident which emphasises that the soldiers were unsure of what to expect in the war.
Besides my aspirations to study abroad, I hope to continue developing my passion for volunteering by leading an independent volunteering program for poverty-stricken families in my community at the College of Charleston. I intend to enhance not only myself, but my college and community by being a driven, involved
While interviewing my veteran, Michael George, my understanding on the aspects and tragedies of the Vietnam war advanced. I knew remarkably little on the war between the United States and Vietnam, so my interview gave me insight and diminished most of my ignorance on the topic. Most of my knowledge was impacted when Michael discussed the major issues that were present during this time frame. For example, I was unaware of the difficulty the draft was bringing upon men and their families. The men despised the idea of having to fight in war, so protests broke out all across the country.
As most people will advocate for someone who is close to them, I am no different. Veterans will always be a significantly cherished population to me. Not only have I served in the military; I have personally lost too many brothers and sisters to this honorable service. The biggest loss encountered however, was not lost while in combat, but his death that occurred later after returning stateside. 3 years ago SSGT Jonathon Rigsby died in his sleep due to hypertension, stress, and anxieties related to PTSD.
Describe what will make you a strong contributor to the Cambodia team. Also, describe areas of growth that you would like to focus on in preparation for the trip. I have a good work ethic, and I am very enthusiastic and committed to projects. The one area of growth I would like to work in is that I have to learn how to teach children. Though I am passionate about teaching, I do not have experience in teaching.
A. Knox Clark Princeton University WRI 153- “Protest!”, Peter Johannesson Draft for Paper Number 3 One of the greatest examples of student protest to occur in the modern era is the backlash against the war in Vietnam. Protests occurred in different settings all over the United States; in this paper I will focus on the student protests against the war in Vietnam that occurred at colleges and universities across the country. The Vietnam War, of course, was not the first time students had banded together to protest actions of our government. The antiwar student activism of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s traces its roots all the way back to the early days of our nation.
My reasons for wanting to serve Peace Corps Volunteer are personal and intellectual. First of all, I want to share the knowledge I have acquired throughout my life by making myself available and becoming part of something bigger. I’ve had the opportunity to attend school and I recently completed a graduate degree; this has been a great accomplishment not only for me, but for my family as well. Therefore serving as a PCV would be a rewarding experience not only for me but for those who have supported me throughout my life, since I will contribute towards a bigger cause by helping to improve the lifestyle of less fortunate people. After successfully receiving a graduate degree, it is expected that I find a permanent job related to my field of
The year was June 23rd, 1968. It was wet, mucky, and the air was filled with a thick sweat that seemed to never dissipate. We were in the middle of thick, green, tropical jungle in Saigon, Vietnam. Me and my friend Carlton were in a platoon of 6 other men. We were sitting there smoking our cigarettes and telling old stories of the good old days when were back in America.
