The True “GOAT” of Boxing
Floyd Mayweather’s 50-0 record has made him a boxing icon throughout the world.
However, Sugar Ray Robinson’s resume and his achievements undeniably outshine Mayweather.
Sugar Ray Robinson’s legacy and accomplishments set him apart as the true GOAT (Greatest of
All Time). Robinson won both welterweight and middleweight titles six times with a record of
173 wins, 19 losses, 6 draws, 2 no contests, 108 KO’s (knockouts), and never once suffered a 10 count in his professional career. Robinson also fought all of the top boxers of his time such as
Carmen Basilio, Jake LaMotta, and many more, unlike Mayweather who cherry-picked and avoided most top fighters who posed a threat to his undefeated record (Augustyn, Smith).

Sugar Ray Robinson’s versatility and his dominance over multiple different weight classes also set him apart from Floyd Mayweather. In addition to winning a plethora of fights at
Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight, Robinson also won world championships in the welterweight and middleweight weight classes (Flatter). Although Floyd Mayweather has competed in a variety of weight classes, he hasn't achieved the same level of dominance as
Robinson, who has fought at weights ranging from 147 pounds to over 180 pounds. Furthermore,
Robinson also defeated Light Heavyweight world champion Sammy Angott, former champion
Friztie Zivic, and Marty Servo at Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight (“Profile of Boxer Sugar

He was fighting like, what? 8 times a year? Against whoever was in the rankings, He wasn’t picking, it was whoever you want, come on”(Tyson). Thus, this claim is irrelevant as
Sugar Ray Robinson fought more world champions and had a better record along with tougher opponents. All in all, Sugar Ray Robinson cemented his legacy as the GOAT as his resume undeniably outshines Mayweather’s with his remarkable achievements in not only his weight class but several others as well. Robinson cleared out all the challengers such as Kid Gavilan,
Sammy Angott, Jake LaMotta, and many more all-time greats, while Floyd avoided a great number of opponents like Manny Pacquiao who Mayweather avoided until he was 36 years old and suffered a few losses. Consequently, Sugar Ray Robinson deserves the title of the GOAT of boxing over Floyd Mayweather as his achievements are something that we may never see again in boxing ever again yet he is still overlooked. Considering this, more Boxing fans should be more aware and appreciative of Sugar Ray Robinson’s
