The Sui dynasty had just begun on March 4, 581 CE and the empire has already undergone some changes. As a time traveler, I arrived there on May 12, 583 CE, and I have returned to the present day and am sharing my experiences with you. The astonishing empire in which China began unification amazed me. I visited the ancient city Daxing, which is now Xi’an. When I arrived in Daxing, the beauty of the city stunned me. It is no wonder why after its revival, it served as the Sui dynasty’s capital. With the Loess plateau in the north, the banks of the Wei River nearby, and the Qin (Tsingling) Mountains to the south, Daxing the beautiful setting also was a booming city full of markets and trade centers. This era was the beginning of a renaissance in both art and culture, as it was the time of a new dynasty. The emperor greatly promoted Buddhism. The people were becoming accustomed to Confucian rituals used by the government, and penalty codes were more simple, fair, and lenient than before. Technology and science were advancing during the Sui dynasty. Scientists studied the planets, making astronomy popular. They studied calendars and astrology as well. The laws and penalty codes were not as complex or confusing, and provided more leniencies for the people.
