Veronica Sawyer and Jason ‘J.D’ Dean stand over the fresh corpse of Heather Chandler, the most popular girl in school. Cause of death, a cup of bright blue drain cleaner, some of which trickled out of her mouth in her attempts of last words. In the midst of Veronica’s panic, J.D comes across a copy of The Bell Jar. This gives him the idea to write a fake suicide note using Veronica’s talent of forgery. Veronica goes along, after all, she just killed her best friend and her worst enemy. Besides, no one wants to admit to murder. Especially when the idea of sending SAT scores to San Quentin is the only thing in your mind. This kicks off a chain of murders disguised as suicide. Heathers is a precursor of Mean Girls where, while other protagonists would stick to indulgent daydreams, Heathers is not afraid to dive into such depravity. Veronica finds herself chopping down the clique with blood rather than spitballs or other jokes. She takes it upon herself and J.D to make the world what they consider a better place.This cynical film was intended to satirize the way society sensationalizes teenage suicide, though there is also a draw in the way the two leads kill off the school’s bullies. One of the teachers drives the former point home when they say, “Whether to kill yourself or not is one of the most important decisions a teenager can make.” This strikes a brutally honest chord, and it shows the morbid truth that can be high school. In fact, what pushed Winona Ryder to accept the role was a hypocritical situation similar to that presented in the film. She knew a classmate who committed suicide.
