This article looks into the unpleasant and touchy subject of youth suicide. This has become a bigger issue over the past few years. There’s many negative impacts on a teens mental health of which are included in this article. Believe it or not, Iphones have seen to put an effect on teen mental health. Today’s children aren’t spending as much time outdoors, but more time on their devices. Since iPhones were released in 2007, there have been many negative effects. In fact, this was the year kids have reported feeling “sad, hopeless, and useless… that they couldn’t do anything right.” Kids shouldn’t have to feel depressed at such a young age. Although, there has shown to be a 50% increase in a clinical level depression between 2011-2015 (Mansfield). This rate continues to rise along with the level of suicide among kids. In Becky Mansfield’s article, “The truth about what’s hurting our kids,” she presents that studies show a 200% increase in the suicide rate among kids aging 10-14 years old. An increase in suicide rates among United States teens occurred at the same time social media use surged (Tanner). Young kids on social media are misusing the app and there is a greater risk of cyberbullying. Suicide rates for teens rose between 2010 and 2015, after they’ve declined for the past two decades (Tanner). It is common for people to compare themselves to others as they’re scrolling through their feed. In fact, 62% of Facebook users reported feeling adequate and 60% reported feelings of jealousy (Abrams).
