Chicago has adopted several nicknames within the past few years. One of the most frequently used nicknames is Chi-Raq. Chicago was given the nickname because the city’s murder rates surpassed the death rates in Iraq within one year. Because of the large amount of publicity Chicago has received, even Spike Lee chose to produce a movie entitled “Chi-Raq”. Chicago has been deemed as a city with several shootings and killings. To Chicago natives, it seems as if this topic is an ongoing experience. In numerous cases, some have stated to be numb to the violence within Chicago. “Many students enroll as freshmen, and begin to struggle with their identity. Freshmen tend to rely on the seniors as their guide to how they should behave, and what is acceptable. Many students imitate people who they deem as “important or cool”. Misbehavior is present for several reasons. According to the Adlerian therapy, all behavior is goal-oriented. The issue is not the cause of the behavior but determining what children want to accomplish, either in the real world or in their own minds” (Henderson & Thompson, 2016). Misbehavior may be soliciting some sort of response. “According to Henderson and Thompson, the response can include attention, power, revenge, and even inadequacy or withdrawal. When students began to seek attention, one may view positive and negative behaviors. The student’s behavior may encourage positive reinforcement or punishment. Attention seeking behaviors can be identified as active constructive, passive constructive, active destructive, and passive destructive. Active constructive behaviors is usually present when a student may want to elevate themselves above other classmates, while not cooperating with the classroom norms. Passive constructive behaviors can be attached to the student who may do all that is expected of them to receive accolades or recognition only. Active destructive behaviors are present usually in students who may be identified as the “class clown”, or one who may regularly receive get in trouble. Passive destructive behaviors are present when a student may seem lazy, or lacking the ability to complete assignments within the classroom. Understanding the different types of behaviors that draw attention can assist school personnel in working best with students. Poor behavior is presented for a reason.
