In Linda Sue Parks A Long Walk to Water is set in Southern Sudan and it is about a girl, Nya who has to walk eighth hours every day to fetch water for her family. Nyas village builds a well so they can have clean water. This well makes it so that all the children may go to school, even the girls because they no longer have to fetch water. Nya meets Salva, the man that made it all happen. This story is also about a boy named Salva who walks a large journey fleeing from war after he has lost his family. He is in a refugee camp when he gets the chance to go to America. When he had settled in America he found his father was still alive and went back to Sudan to see him. After his visit with his father, he decides to take action and build wells for people in Sudan. He builds a well in a Nuer village for the first time and meets a girl that lives in this village named Nya. The events in A Long Walk to Water help to convey the theme which is, the will to survive is important in a challenging environment. …show more content…

This quote shows that Nya has a hard everyday life where she has to walk eight hours, nearly the whole day getting water for her family. The water that Nya gathers for her family is not clean it is very muddy and dirty and gets them sick, but they have to drink it to live. Another quote in ALWTW is “Men and woman, boys and girls, old and young, walking, walking, walking…. (23). “Salva had never been so hungry” (23). These quotes prove that Salva is persevering because he is walking and walking while starving but he doesn't stop even though he doesn't know where they are walking and he doesn't want to leave his family
