The lab started off by measuring critical materials for the lab: the mass of an an empty 100 mL beaker, mass of beaker and copper chloride together(52.30 g), and the mass of three iron nails(2.73 g). The goal of this experiment is to determine the number of moles of copper and iron that would be produced in the reaction of iron and copper(II) chloride, the ratio of moles of iron to moles of copper, and the percent yield of copper produced. 2.00 grams of copper(II) chloride was added in the beaker to mix with 15 mL of distilled water. Then, three dry nails are placed in the copper(II) chloride solution for approximately 25 minutes. The three nails have to be scraped clean by sandpaper to make the surface of the nail shiny; if the nails are not clean, then some unknown substances might accidentally mix into the reaction and cause variations of the result.
The patterns of organization that are most frequently used by writers are chronological order, spatial order, emphatic order, and causal order. The chronological order means to move through time, spatial order is moving from outside to inside, emphatic order is from least to most significant, and causal order is the effects to causes. These patterns may seem like they’re formals but they are not. They have become discourse conventions because they correlate with the natural thinking processes and they are versatile. The five-paragraph formula seems imperative and causes problems and it should be addressed by writing instructors at all levels and those who have created multiple strategies that share their
Through the use of anaphora, metaphor, and informative figurative language, Barry portrays the work of a scientist as challenging and complex. Barry begins by using patterns of repetition and anaphora in the first paragraph. He does this to strengthen the traditional recognition that certainty is good and uncertainty is bad. Providing these antithetical concepts of uncertainty v. certainty, or good v. bad, also strengthen his claim that the work of a scientist is challenging and complex. Next, Barry complicates our understanding of the nature of scientific research through the use of metaphor throughout the essay.
Vast numbers of stylistic choices present themselves to an author during the writing process. The impact stylistic choices make on a piece can determine the overall effectiveness of the message being conveyed. While choosing an effective device can prove difficult, Nancy Mairs expertly implemented the use of several devices in her piece “The Unmaking of a Scientist,” to amplify the influence a person 's style has on their work. Mairs’ use of juxtaposition emphasizes the stark contrast between straightforward scientists and cultivated essayist.
Unknown Lab Report Mikee Lianne Gonzales Biol 351- 1005 Holly Martin Unknown: # 76 Abstract This report is about identifying the respective genus of the given unknown organism. The goal is to show and prove the student’s understanding of microbiology and laboratory learned experimental techniques.
The rhetorical devices imbue the text with power by describing the intricate parts of the scientific method and how it affects scientists greatly. These rhetorical devices also make the text beautiful and easier to connect with by including imagery of the unknown wilderness and nature, which relates with scientists and their studies. Being a scientists and delving into scientific research is a difficult task and it requires not only scientists, but also the every day person to be the torch bearers of discovery as
Some use of transitions to help clarify relationships between ideas and paragraphs. Weak transitions: Intro jumpy; Body paragraphs not connected. Lacking or weak transitions.
Leah Romero 10/30/2017 Conclusion Lab 3 Chem 102L In lab 3, fundamentals of chromatography, the purpose was to examine how components of mixtures can be separated by taking advantage of different in physical properties. A huge process in this lab was paper chromatography, which was used to isolate food dyes that are found in different drink mixes. The different chromatograms of FD&C dyes were compared to identify which dyes are present in each of the mixes.
The writing process, when explained on paper, seems like a series of simple steps, though this is entirely not the case. As supported by the four authors in this unit, the writing process, though it does adhere to a few basic steps in development, it is an art that takes a tremendous amount of trial, error, and learning from mistakes to be perfected. The professional writers of this unit made claim that the act of writing is an extremely intricate process; described using words such as “chaos” from Peter Elbow in his “The process of Writing —Growing.” Expanding upon this, Elbow explains our editorial instinct is much stronger than our producing instinct, which naturally causes the process of producing written material to slacken for the
When comparing student 5A writing sample to the rubric, the student wrote an informative text which examines a topic, for example, the space race between America and Russia, who would land on the moon first. The rubric is divided into five categories and is ranked as 1 for little evidence, 2 for approaching standard, and 3 meets expectations. The first category of the rubric states whether the writer included a topic clearly, general observation, information relating to the topic, and descriptions of the writing. The introduction clearly stated a topic sentence and main themes which provided a general focus for the paper. The bodies’ paragraph began with a topic sentence which informed the reader on the theme of each paragraph that followed
After concluding and graduating from high school, I was confident in my skills writing literary analysis: breaking down the diction, literary devices, characterization, and imagery present within the realm of a novel to form an argument regarding the novel’s central theme. Yet, the writing assignments and expectations held at UC, Irvine would catch me off guard my first quarter. Unable to enroll into Writing 39B in the Fall Quarter, my first writing experience at UCI was producing formal lab reports in Chemistry M2LA, deviating from the simple worksheets I was used to in high school. Therefore, we had to figure out what the T.A. was looking for through trial and error, hoping for a good grade each week. I would put together my objective, procedures,
Structuring a paper will help create different ideas on how to approach the assignment. Although, the instructor may not allow students to create their own structure, there may be a specific structure that the instructor wants. Hinton goes on to compare a restaurant menu to an writing assignment, “If a restaurant menu listed the desserts up front, you might find the design unfamiliar and the menu difficult to navigate. The same can be said for formalized writing structures including lab reports or literature reviews…” (Hinton 30).
The transitions throughout my paper were either nonexistent, or in one case, which merited comment, based off order and chronology rather than the flow of
Transitions and sentence-to-sentence connections enhance the flow of the paragraph by showing the relationships among ideas, allowing the reader to follow the writer’s train of thought. Student understands the paragraph
