While imprisoned at Alcatraz, wrote a three page letter to his son Albert “Sonny” Capone. He possibly wrote it in 1938 because he ended the letter saying“I will be with you in less than a year” and he left Alcatraz in 1939. He wrote the letter for many reasons. Possibly to tell his son what he has been up to in prison, telling him when he will be home, and reminding his son that he still loves him. Al Capone is portrayed as a cold hearted mob boss and gangster but this letter to his son shows his soft side which is unexpected to everyone who reads it.
Al Capone starts the letter by giving advice to his son. He says”Junior keep up the way you are doing, and don’t let nothing get you down. When you get the blues, Sonny, put on one of the records with songs I wrote you about to Ma…” Capone is telling his son …show more content…

After the comment on his records, Capone talks a lot about music. About 90% of his letter is about music. It includes how he can play the mandala, transpose music, certain songs he likes, and how he is going to play music on his mandala for his son when he gets home. Capone even makes a comment that“their isn’t a song written that I can’t play.” He also mentions being in a band in Alcatraz and learning how to play new instruments“...when I was playing in the band in here. First I learned a Tenor Guitar and then a Tenor Banjo…” Capone then makes a small comment about wanting his son and wife to visit, makes a joke about him losing weight, then goes into detail about what he’s been doing during his time in Alcatraz which includes sports, working, and music.
