Survey and Analysis on a Alexa Ng’s Reading Attitudes and Interests
The child whom I am working with for this assignment is called Alexa Ng. Alexa is a female, aged 5 years old. She was born on 4 February 2012 and is the firstborn in her family. Her family consists of 4 members; her father, mother, herself and younger brother. Alexa spends most of her nights watching the television with her family as a form of family bonding.
Summary Of Findings Alexa’s response towards recreational reading was not as favourable as compared to her response towards academic reading. She showed a strong dislike to reading for enjoyment purpose. From the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey, Alexa responded with a “very upset Garfield” to “How do you feel when you read a book in school during free time?” and “How do you feel about reading for fun at home?”. With relevance to Alexa’s reading attitude, she claimed that she felt the “happiest” to learn from a book, allowing me to interpret that she makes her own choice of learning about the things which interest her. Her selective reading interests contributed to her drive for seeking knowledge from a book. Since Alexa initiates her learning and discovery from books, she would have a more enjoyable time reading rather than if she was forced to read the things she dislike.
Additionally, Alexa mentioned that she felt the “happiest” when she reads out loud in class, suggesting that she is a very confident child. Therefore, reading to Alexa could be the element which boosts her self-confidence. As a whole, I can deduce that Alexa demonstrated a fairly high level of intrapersonal skill (Plant,
