In the book Fever by Laurie Halse Anderson, the author details Mathilda Cook’s personal journey from a typical teen into a young adult while the Yellow Fever epidemic devastates everything around her.
When Hazel states that Joni was “the woman who used to babysit [her] and Gus when [they] were little.” she implies that she is comfortable around her (90). This makes it easier for her to rediscover herself, knowing she has someone she can trust. Plus, Joni has Hazel’s best interests at heart. Joni helps Hazel heal from her grief and find a place in the world.
Hazel was introduced into the novel as a yearling who looked as though he could care for himself. He belonged to Sandleford Warren but was just an average rabbit. He was not a Chief Rabbit, nor was he part of any Owsla. Despite his youth, he believed he needed to take charge when his brother, Fiver, said trouble was coming. They went to the Chief Rabbit to warn him of Fivers premonition, yet left short of being laughed at.
Her book describes the hardship and struggle she faced growing up in Little Rock and what it was like to be hurt and abused all throughout high school.
Ellen Foster is a book about a young girl who is living in terrible conditions and her father is sexually abusive, verbally abusive and even hits her. Her mother ends up killing herself by overdosing on medication so Ellen has to find a home. After her mother dies, Ellen experiences abuse from her father, and because of that she is forced to pay the bills, shop, and cook for herself. The writing style is a memoir of Ellen Fosters life, and it’s a great learning book. It shows how greatful I should be, just like in A Long Way Gone.
It is very notable that Hazel was the one who watched the event because it exhibits that she can still process information and feel sad about it, but it will eventually be forgotten. In comparison, George was the one to watch the television program while Hazel was washing the dishes in the film. This is unusual because George is still forced forget because of his handicap. Although in both scenarios they are sad, they simply, “Forget sad things”. This is dissimilar because though neither can remember, Hazel does not have a handicap.
She is a very emotional woman and cares for people. Hazel cried when she sees her own son, Harrison, on television but she doesn't remember why she was crying when she is asked by George. Her below average intelligence prevents her from remembering things just like how George can’t remember things, this causes them to be equal to each other. In the film, The Fault in Our Stars, we are introduced to Hazel Grace Lancaster, a teenage girl diagnosed with stage IV cancer. She shares her backstory and discusses her cancer diagnosis. Hazel states that it started out as thyroid cancer, but it moved onto her lungs. She explained, “there wasn’t much they could do, but they tried anyway” (Boone, 2014). In the beginning of the film, Hazel and her mother are attending a doctor’s appointment where they are seen meeting with Dr. Maria.
This shows her negative outlook on life because she had no hope for the future of the book she just assumed that it was over. Eventually, while Hazel and Augustus’ relationship grows, she realizes that Augustus shows her the meaning in her life, “It seemed to me that I had already seen everything pure and good in the world, and I was beginning to suspect that even if death didn’t get in the way, the kind of love that Augustus and I share could never last” (Green 278).
