Journalist Anna Quindlen in her article, “The C Word in the Hallways”, argues that children with mental health issues should receive help instead of stigmatization. She supports her claim by utilizing quantitative data when illustrating what happens when a mentally ill child doesn’t receive correct help, then guilting the audience when explaining how society views mental illness, and finally commanding the audience when describing how society should fix its issue on how it perceives mental health. Quindlen’s purpose is to criticize society's outlook on the issue of mental health in children in order to change the way people view mental health. American Jezebel: The Uncommon Life of Anne Hutchinson, the Woman who Defied the Puritans is a biography of Anne Hutchinson written by Eve LaPlante who is a direct descendant of Hutchinson. The book follows her life and gives some insight into the lives of people she was surrounded by. As the book progresses, the reader can better understand who Hutchinson was. It begins with Hutchinson being summoned at her trial at the courthouse in Cambridge, Massachusetts for heresy and sedition.
Community in the dictionary means a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. Everyone belongs to a community or considers themselves a part of one, however communities tends to take away individualism. Anna Quindlen, author of “Commencement Speech at Mount Holyoke College”, spoke to the graduating class and delivered a speech on the effects of society on individuals. The purpose of this was to lead and guide the graduates into a happier life. Being true to self can only bring happiness, conforming to mold never designed to fit will only cause discomfort and unhappiness.
Throughout the course of the last year, the political climate around the citizens of the United States – as well others around the world who were affected – became exceedingly politically charged. The country and its people were faced with a deep and complicated partition. Directly derived from the 2016 United States presidential election, political messages had become common place throughout all forms of media. From television shows, music, and the most apparent being news outlets, the population was continuously exposed to political ideals of different groups, as well as debates against their own. Even so, there have been countless times when political messages are not as apparent or as direct.
Anna Quindlen’s essay, “The C Word in the Hallways,” is a very powerful essay that focuses on the mental health issues of teens and young adults. She builds her argument by using emotional appeals that cause the reader to understand her points and sympathize with her and the mentally challenged people. In the third paragraph, Quindlen uses specific examples of teens who committed crimes because of the mental health state they were in, and gains the reader's attention by stating, “So many have already been lost” (344). This makes the reader want to know who has been lost and what significant event caused this tragedy to occur. When she says “reflection on enormous blessings” she means the blessing is people coming together and being there for one and another since they are all going through the same thing. In a matter of days, you should have seen how many things these people came up with. They put these negative things together by lying and forcing junior workers to say things that were not true.
