In Chapter 10 of Mary Roach's nonfiction book Stiff, she writes about many different stories relating to cannibalism. This includes describing different traditions in various countries, unique medicinal practices, and numerous narratives. Throughout this chapter, Roach uses both imagery and satire to convey that readers should donate their bodies to science because it leads to advances in knowing what using different parts of the body (and things produced by it) can do to people. She hears a lot of stories like that and decides it's time to take a flight there and find out more. When on her flight, she starts describing the food served. Roach recounts the sausage she is given and says, “The weiner was too small for the bun, too small for any bun, too small for its own skin” (239). The rhetorical strategy satire is used to make readers feel more calm after the telling of gruesome stories. When writing a story, especially if the main purpose is to persuade, you can't just describe something absolutely horrifying and go on with the book like nothing happened. In Medeiros 4 Roaches' case, she decides to use mature humor to ease some emotions inflicted by the telling of the unsettling stories she chose to talk about. After Roach tells about her flight to China, she moves on to tell about her actual experience there. She starts by describing a specific story she wants more information about.
