In “Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” Jessica Statsky shines a light on a pressing issue about competitive sports and how participating in it at a young age has negative effects on children. Statsky talks about the damage caused by these sports both physically and mentally and how the pressure and stress become too much to bear for the growing children. The extreme physical activity demanded by these sports but an unnecessary strain on their bodies. Statsky highlights the fact that these sports due to their demanding nature can result in serious injuries which can take years to heal back up. I completely agree with the concerns that she raises that the current trend of these competitive sport is not healthy for the children. At such a young age they are being taught that winning is the only possibility and defeating the other team is all that matter. Parents and coaches not only support it but teach their children these things as well. This kind of mindset can have a really bad impact on a child’s mind. Most of the time the effects of the injuries remain with them for decades. This has a huge impact on the minds of a child as they get fearful of their safety. They try to refrain from playing and tend to avoid the sports. I can very well relate to Jessica’s example because I faced a knee injury once and I haven’t been able to play to my full potential ever since.
