In his Book, Off the Books: The Underground Economy of the Urban Poor, Sudhir Alladi Venkatesh, explains that in the early-nineties while doing field work in the Southside of Chicago he gravitated to a predominantly working-poor black community near his field site (ix). Venkatesh describes the ten-squared block community as being in disrepair very much like the high-rises that were being torn down in the surrounding area (iv). In the presence of some “greystones” and “brownstones” Venkatesh noticed vacant lots, beat-up homes, and what he perceived to be inadequate city involvement in the community -streets need fixing, and trash pick-up was lacking (x). There were also closed storefronts and burned-out buildings in the area (Venkatesh, 92).
Danielle L. McGuire’s At the Dark End of the Street, “an important, original contribution to civil rights historiography”, discusses the topic of rape and sexual assault towards African American women, and how this played a major role in causing the civil rights movement (Dailey 491). Chapter by chapter, another person's story is told, from the rape of Recy Taylor to the court case of Joan Little, while including the significance of Rosa Parks and various organizations in fighting for the victims of unjust brutality. The sole purpose of creating this novel was to discuss a topic no other historian has discussed before, because according to McGuire they have all been skipping over a topic that would change the view of the civil rights movement.
In the Saint Louis American, I discovered an article, “Ferguson, equity and health, three years later”, written by Bob Hughes. The article talks about Ferguson and the death of Michael Brown Jr. that occurred on August 9, 2014. He mentioned the spark of the protests and rallies in response to Michael Brown Jr.’s death, and Ferguson’s respond to police brutality, racial profiling and the disproportionate rate of injustices among black people. Hughes main focus was on the aftermath of the protests, now that three years have passed, to see if progress has been made.
Now throughout the duration of reading Anderson’s story of the inner-city in Philadelphia, one can learn and think a lot through the journey. Reading this book made me feel like I was actually visiting the city or walking through each street that was being explained about. Each different aspect of life, such as, school, family, crime or even relationships made me contrast the different lifestyles they had compared to the lifestyle that I associate with. Even the explanation of the code’s regulation through the way of talking, dress style, behavior or simple etiquette of eye contact specified enough detail, that it was easy enough to easily picture or imagine. It was thought-provoking to read about how Anderson was able to uncover the confrontations

He attempts to explore the responses and reaction of people in weak positions—the truly disadvantaged, to systemic racial discrimination and social inequality. Specifically, he examines a black community in the Seventh ward of Philadelphia —a community that, according to previous work done by W.E Du Bois in The Philadelphia Negro, is faced with many social ills such as poverty and crime.
Elijah Anderson’s Code of the Street is an account of street violence in the Poor African American communities of Philadelphia. Andersons theory brings together elements of respect, loyalty, and honor, the “code of the street” is an informal system used to control social interactions in impoverished neighborhoods and views violence as acceptable, appropriate, and necessary response to transgressions. In these economically deprived and drug and crime ridden communities, the code of the street is a subculture that controls behavior, particularly violence. As a result of epidemic joblessness and enduring racism in mainstream society, inner-city African Americans are pressured to abide by the code of the street as a survival mechanism.
In 1973, Clifford Geertz- an American anthropologist- authored The Interpretation of Cultures, in which he defines culture as a context that behaviors and processes can be described from. His work, particularly this one, has come to be fundamental in the anthropological field, especially for symbolic anthropology-study of the role of symbols in a society- and an understanding of “thick description”-human behavior described such that it has meaning to an outsider of the community it originated. Alice Goffman is an American sociologist and ethnographer widely-known for her work, On the Run: Fugitive Life in an American City (2015). In this work, she relays how for her undergraduate and doctoral research project, she immersed herself in a predominately African-American community of Philadelphia as a white, privileged woman. Goffman goes on the explain how the frequent policing and incarceration of young, black men from this neighborhood affects the entire community and even affected Goffman herself.
Anderson discussed the Code of the Street as it pertains to inter-city morality, assessing that these attitudes either fall in the categories of decent or violent (Duncan, pg. 111). The “Code of the Street” is what Anderson would classify as the violent and is used as the law of the street that governs the community behavior particularly interpersonal violence and aggression.
