Cry Liberty: The Great Stono-River Slave Rebellion of 1739 was written by Professor Peter C. Hoffer, who taught as a historian at the University of Georgia. This novel is a brief, yet very informative piece of work that provides a re-examination of a series of incidents that occurred during the Stono Rebellion (which transpired on September 9, 1739). This rebellion manifested once a group of about 20 slaves had broken into a store alongside the Stono River, nearby Charles Town, which is now known as Charleston, South Carolina. The author did an excellent job recreating events in this book and developing the question of whether or not it was actually a rebellion.
One of the two books being compared in this essay is titled “Defiance” by Alvin Townley and was written in 2014. The other novel that was chosen for this essay was written in 1971 and is titled “Five Years to Freedom” it was written by James N. Rowe. These two books were focused on the capture and the treatment of American Prisoners of War during the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War started in 1954 and ended on April 30, 1975 totaling over twenty years. Each book has its idea of the incidents that happened and in “Defiance” there are several stories of a gang eleven American soldiers that was known famously as the Alcatraz Eleven. People aren't always undertaking missions, but people who do undertake a mission have self-believe and courage. I read Rikki-Tikki show heroism when taking down two cobras, plus Farah Ahmedi pushed herself with a disability when she climbed a mountain. But they weren't the only ones, Ernesto Galarza also showed courage when he was optimistic and saw learning as a fun thing. All these examples show that it takes self-believe and courage to undertake a mission. Rikki-Tikki Tavi by Rudyard Kipling is a fable where animals have anthropomorphic traits.
The Color of Water, a memoir written by James McBride, describes the struggle James experienced growing up in a poor family with eleven other siblings while going through a racial identity crisis. Throughout the book, the chapters alternate from James’ point of view to his mother’s point of view, both individuals accounting their difficult childhoods. These different perspectives come together and make one lucid piece of writing. During the course of the book, the reader will learn that James encountered many obstacles in his life. However, these difficulties molded James and made him grow as an individual.
Louie Zamperinis story is one of perseverance, strength, and courage. The central idea of this book is to never give up and keep on going, even in the darkest situations. This novel explores many issues and ideas, but the one that stands out the most is the personal one. Laura Hillenbrand uses the themes of suffering and perseverance in the novel Unbroken to show how if a person believes he/she can do it, it can be done. The author demonstrates this in many ways telling the story of his childhood until adulthood.
It’s important to know what drives people to take risks, but people do crazy, often dangerous, things when they undertake a mission. For example, Farah Ahmedi climbed a mountain on a prosthetic leg to reach to reach freedom. Rikki-Tikki Tavi wanted to protect Teddy, Teddy’s family, and the animals from the back yard. Aengus wanted to find his true love in the wild. These characters had different reasons for doing what they did.
In the novel The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien expresses to the reader why the men went to the war and continued to fight it. In the first chapter, “The Things They Carried,” O’Brien states “It was not courage, exactly; the object was not valor. Rather they were too frightened to be cowards.” The soldiers went to war not because they were courageous and ready to fight, but because they felt the need to go. They were afraid and coped with their lack of courage by telling stories (to themselves or aloud) and applied humor to the situations they encountered.

Through his troubles as a child, emerged a strong-willed Olympic runner, who later became a military aviator. He was lost at sea and then captured by the Japanese as a prisoner of war. He endured years of abuse and suffering but still managed to stay true to who he was.
Jasper Jones In Jasper Jones, written by Craig Silvey, the main theme is courage. This is demonstrated throughout the text, that bravery is demonstrated not by being heroic instead it is by standing up for oneself or others, especially when there may be a great risk. The three characters that represent bravery the most are Charlie Bucktin, Jasper Jones and Jeffrey Lu. Jasper and Jeffrey are subjected to violence and racism by the parochial town of Corrigan while Charlie is bullied because he is intelligent and academically successful.
During World War II, Nazi Germany had a machine called Enigma that sent coded messages to and back from German airships and generals (Grime). There were 150 million million million ways these messages could have been coded, and it changed daily (“Military Use of the Enigma”). It was known as “the unbreakable code”. I’m going to tell you how that code was broken. Not many people know how it was broken, or even what it was, but without breaking Enigma, historians are confident that Germany would have won the war.
The Help (2011) directed by Tate Taylor, is an inspirational, courageous and empowering story about Southern women in the 1960s. It's the story of the help: the black maids of Jackson, Mississippi, and the relationship with their white employers. The central theme of the film is courage, and how the characters embrace courage to overcome obstacles and fight for social justice. Whether it is their ability to deviate from in-group norms, or overcome fear, courage is essential throughout the characters' journeys. In this essay, I will analyse the situations endured by the characters, and how they respond to these situations with courage.
“ Rikki-tikki-tavi,” by Richard Kipling, Rikki had a right to proud of himself but not too proud because he saved the English family from getting killed by the snakes. Rikki-tikki did some unintelligent things that could have killed him, but he fought off the snakes that could have killed the small english family in the bungalow. Rikki saved the father of Teddy by fighting off Nag.” Rikki tikki saw Nag and Nagaina in the bathroom, and decided after Nagina left the he needed to kill nag. Rikk told himself that if he didn 't jump on Naga 's back and break it the first kill, he would still be able to fight.
