One’s earliest exposure to the concept of racism was through learning about how African Americans were once slaves to White people and were treated under awful conditions. However, even though this is true Daniel Tatum expresses that racism can also be defined as “... a system involving cultural messages and institutional policies and practices as well as the beliefs and actions of individuals (Tatum, 1999, p. 7). Racism is categorized as a system that will allow one race to suffer a disadvantage in many aspects of life while another race will have more advantages. Just like back then today, Whites are the superior race that receives various advantages thus resulting in people of color being treated differently and having unequal opportunities in life (Tatum, 1999). White people will most likely be treated better, talked to with more respect, and receive a greater number of opportunities.
Racism has been around for a long time and it still exists today. It has been embedded to a degree that it reproduces itself. It is in the culture of the future generation. What is seen and taught to us in our environment is how we learn our behavior and actions towards others. Because of this, whether we realize it or not, racist behavior is taught and passed on.
Do people discriminate others to hurt them or they do not realize what their actions are doing? Racial discrimination is when a person is treated less favorably than another person in a similar situation because of their race, colour, descent, national or ethnic origin or immigrant status. Crime and Punishment have been the main symbols of the existing racial disparities in the United States for a long time now. In the earlier days, the criminal justice systems mostly entailed executions, prosecutorial and judicial prejudice, and chain-gang style penal practices. The judicial systems saw the minority groups being tried in all white court rooms by all-white juries. The highest number of offenders consisted of individuals from the black communities who were subjected to harsh punishments. Blacks who victimized the whites faced harsh and racially discriminative sentences.
Racial bias has played a significant role in the criminal justice system throughout history, and it continues to play one to this day. Whether it comes to police brutality, sentencing, rehabilitation, bail, etc., race is a relevant factor in so many of these criminal justice topics. The criminal justice system was not built to help those who are low income or those who are a person of color. Unfortunately, being low income and a person of color often go hand in hand in the criminal justice system. When there are statistics to prove how people of color are treated differently than those who are not, it has become a problem.
Race in America today are mixed up between all different types of people. Most people that come to America from different countries are mostly a different race rather than white. Well in today 's world it With social media and other uses of the internet, people have begun to voice their frustrations with the social injustice in America. Over the past year they 're have been a numerous amount of times where people being detained by cops are shot not because of excessive force of not complying with officers but because they where black people with black skin. Systemic Racism in the United States Many individuals today have different point of views on how the United States of America became what it is today. For instance, point of views such as how society learned to function the way it does, the law and order in place, and ultimately, how circumstances have developed throughout history. Unfortunately, institutional/institutionalized racism, also known as systemic racism is also a concept that has settled and is grown to be quite predominant in the United States all through times past. Systemic racism continues to take place in settings such as banks, courts of law, government organizations, school systems, and the like.
Colorism is the new racism I remember it was a Monday morning sitting in the metro train trying to go to my internship, and a Caucasian boy tapped me on the shoulder and said I was pretty for a dark girl. Colorism in the African American community in the United States is the worst kind of discrimination because it allows prejudice to happen within races and has sadly become so prominent that it has replaced racism as the new popular form of bigotry. The exercise "What is Race?" ameliorated my way of thinking about race. I could change wrong belief that I have had about the classification of race in ancient time that is race is sorted by genetic base and outward feature such as skin color. I learned some interesting fact that ancient people divided people in terms of religion, status, class, and language. Being bigoted about races, I thought it was a right thing to divide people with physical differences because it is an archetypal idea to believe in the era I live. However, it is not true that outward characteristic can define race because there are mixed races that effective to certain physical traits.
The 21st century in America is thought of to be a progressive nature of society. With gay marriage laws now passed and strict non-segregations laws in effect, America in principle proves to be a country with liberty and justice for all. However, America masks the true hatred and racism that fills our country today. America to this day has found roots leading all the way back to the fifties and sixties. Society has not progressed since 1959 due to the presence of economic injustice, lack of unity and lack of truth.

The first step we should take towards demolishing racism is to allow children, starting at the age of 7, to learn more about the impact of racism, specifically by having to watch a program that he/she will watch 24/7 all about anti-racism. By introducing this topic at a very young age, the child’s mind will be able to easily understand and comprehend the day-to-day struggles of those who have faced the troubles of racism and will motivate them to never go down that path. In terms of laws, racism is hardly mentioned, which goes to show, the U.S. needs to enact more laws to help cripple racism. For instance, for every second some orange skinned, wigged, egotistical maniac uses some atrocious, racist, name-calling, rant directed towards an individual, they will have to pay a small loan of a million dollars.
