When I was 10 years old I looked up communism, and it meant ‘a society where property was public, and everyone would be helped according to needs.’ This confused me because I had always heard of communism in a negative context. Such a society would mean that, everyone would have food, water, shelter, an education and job. This is the ideal society. So why was it talked about with disgust and horror?
Lois Lowry gets most of the ideas for the giver from her life. When her sister died she wondered if it would be better if people couldn’t love at all because then we would not feel pain after the love ends. This is how Lowry got the idea that the people in the community cannot love. When Lowry saw the news report about the mass murder she didn’t really care because it wasn’t anywhere near her. In the giver when people are released the person that releases them doesn’t feel any remorse for what they have done.

In the first place, on page 177, the author clearly states. “He was not warmer; if anything he felt more numb and more cold. He was not less exhausted; on the contrary, his steps were leaden, and he could barely move his freezing, tired legs.” From this statement it is proven that Jonas’s health conditions are extremely poor.

In The Giver by Lois Lowry, is a community in which they have a lot of rules they would have to follow, so it could improve the community and help. This book is mostly about a boy named Jonas, who was about to be told what he would be doing as a grown up. Only the twelves get assigned jobs When Jonas is about to be given his job he oddly gets skipped and everyone notices it, “She skipped me, Jonas thought, stunned, had he heard wrong,” (Lowry 57). But after everyone got their job/assignment the Chief elder says that he has been chosen to be the next receiver of memory. There are some crazy memories he gets from this job but not all of the memories are bad they are also happy and sweet ones.
Literary Analysis: The Giver Imagine a world where everything seems perfect but truly it is not as pleasant as it appears. In The Giver by Lois Lowry shows us a community in the future with no feelings at all. Jonas a twelve year old boy knows his life as it is and one evening he learns the truth about the community. Jonas set’s off into a adventure to change it all. Character,conflict,and symbolism makes the reader see thru the eyes of a twelve year old in a place of slavery disguised without anyone knowing it.

Within the dystopian community of The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas the protagonist and Receiver of Memory realizes his community is oblivious by not given any choices, but to follow the rules, or else, to perish. In this surprisingly terrifying novel, Lowry implies a constant theme of sameness creating protection and safety ,but when people’s choices, diversity, and memories are taken away, citizens lose the right of equality and only endure a monotonous robot like lifestyle. . Throughout the Giver, people commanded and stalked by the government, but still follow all of the absurd laws that create a corrupt society.

In Jonas’s community, they have an absurd idea of wiping away memories ;like sorrow and war. It had only been a few days since Jonas had received the chilling memory of war, on the day of the unscheduled holiday, Jonas finds Asher playing war and he has a mental breakdown, remembering the memory,“You have no way of knowing this… but it is a cruel game… in the past,” (pg 134).
