GUN CONTROL IN THE US (Non-fiction paper)
1. Give an outline of the various attitudes towards gun control in the US as presented in the three texts.
The three texts deal with gun control in the US, and they all offer a different view on the issue. In the first text, “Donald Trump’s position on Gun Control” written by Joshua Eaton from 2016, we are given an insight into how Donald Trump, the current president of the US, views the situation. One of his main arguments is that gun laws tend to make people more vulnerable to gun violence in the sense that a good person with a gun will be able to stop a bad person with a gun. By writing the text in this specific vernacular the author is able to convey his point to a larger group of readers because it is common speech, and as a result easier for the readers to understand. In addition to that, we also perceive the employment of capitalized words such as “AMERICA”, which ensures the readers to read it in a high tone, hence leaving the reader with a sense of both powerful and intense feelings. The author’s tone is significant since it portrays the attitude in which the writer adapts towards the subject. In general the second text contains a lot of vague expressions that are not quite precise.
The third text has a rather different style and tone that is aimed towards the reader. In comparison to the former text the third text appears to be quite concise and formal where it presents a myriad of quotations. Nevertheless, just like the second text it also contains contractions:
“In Moore’s opinion there’s only one way to enact strict gun laws in the US, and it’s a chilling proposition.”
Here we see two contractions “there’s” and “it’s”, this is not very suitable for a briefing paper since it must be addressed in a formal way. Since, the text contains a lot of quotes it is difficult to determine the writing style and tone. However, one could prudently classify the language as informal. Furthermore, the tone could be described as serious since the different views regarding gun violence are ultimately based on facts.
