Response to the Nicholas Carr’s Article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”
Experts discuss the influence of the Internet on people’s brains for years. Many scientists and common men lean toward the idea the World Wide Web has more negative than positive impact on the mind. The list of critics include Nicholas Carr with his article Is Google Making Us Stupid? In this work author states the active use of the Internet leads to the lost of the ability to acquire big pieces of information. Carr partially bases his arguments on the personal experience and complaints of his acquaintances: “the more they use the Web, the more they have to fight to stay focused on long pieces of writing” (Carr 2). People need to process big information scopes both at work and in home, and their brains adapt to this pressure. It leads to the change of information perception as the person starts to focus on key words and ideas in the work. The Internet (and other media) gives an opportunity to do it because of the abundance of abstracts, summaries and advanced search algorithms. Blogger complains that he “can’t read War and Peace anymore” (Carr 3) is not necessarily a sign of dullness; it can just show the brain does not want to work with such volume of “dilute” data. Carr’s words are not the direct demonstration the brain became more stupid, they can be a sign it is just more tired of the textual information, as the author admitted people read more today. Estes provided several studies to support the idea of the positive impact of the Internet on the brain. For example, he mentioned senior Internet users have a better brain activity than people who do not search through the Web (Estes 3). Changes can happen because of the necessity to learn how to work with new technologies and develop skills for the information searching. A person should make efforts if he or she wants to find something specific. User needs to know what to look for and check huge information scopes before the desirable result. This process should increase brain’s activity and help to develop new mental skills, so it is impossible to say the Internet makes people stupid.
