How Joey Pigza Transforms in His Book Have you ever had a kid in class that always gets into trouble one way or another? I have a story about a kid who swallowed his house key during class. I learned about this in “Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key” by Jack Gantos. The audience will learn about how all kids can be equal, but some need a little extra help, considering that Joey Pigza starts off the book really distracted but is much calmer by the end of the story. In the beginning of the book, Joey knows the rules, but he does not follow them. He blurts things out in the middle of class, and takes Mrs. Maxy’s big scissors out of her desk. Joey makes bad decisions, and does things having no idea of the consequences. The teacher asks him to sharpen pencils for her, and he grinds them all the way down until they are an inch long. They sent him to an actual Special Ed school for six weeks. He went to a doctor to get medication that works better for him. They gave him patched to put on like a band-aid, and they inject the right amount of medicine over time to keep him calm. He learned proper manners for school, and kept up with his class work while he was away. With his new medication he can stay calm throughout the whole day and follow the rules. When he goes back to school, he shows the nurse that he can sit still and focus on one thing. He goes back to Special Ed at his school for one week to make sure he is good to be in class. Everyone is happy to see him, because he was always a good kid, but there was something in him causing him to make judgements.
