In “La Puerta” by Jose Antonio Burciago, a ramshackle door symbolizes the poverty that the protagonist, Sinesio, and his family come face to face with. The reader can see that Sinesio’s poverty causes them to have rough, un-fixable problems. While Faustina is cooking dinner, she momentarily looks up and her eyes fixate on the heavily patched door, water seeping through the cracks (Burciago 187).
