In this article Maurice Hindle argues the ways in which individuals perceived the overall story behind the novel “Frankenstein.” Hindle states that those who thought the novel was based on “a mad scientist who creates a living being out of human parts; it then becomes uncontrollable and wreaks havoc on the community” (29) have perceived this novel incorrectly. It is important to know that during this time period the idea, and practice of science did not exist. This was because music was and still is to this day considered to be reflected in all the arts in various ways: via “emotional qualities, color, and harmony” (2). In the Romantic period it was considered rare to include musical statements in portraits, if they were utilized it was most likely as a symbol of social position. For example, there was a picture that depicted a young girl turning from her piano, which was a reflection of an upper class individual. This information helps us to grasp the ways in which people back in the Romantic period were able to classify individuals based on their personal belongings such as musical instruments. Perkins informs us that during the romantic period, choral folk music was the type of music that was most adorned by all individuals. Because of the newly developed choral song, communities began to come together in order to create choral singing groups. Ironically during this time period, it was said that only males were to be a “member” of something, which in return lead to all male voice choral music. One of the most famous German composers that incorporated all male voices happened to be Franz Schubert, at the young age of sixteen he began experimenting and composing for an ensemble of male voices. This information helps us get a feel of what the trending music was throughout the romantic period, and as an individual interested in learning about this time period this source would be beneficial.
