The one-day that everyone looks forward to is their wedding day, but in today’s society many ridicule couples' intentions for marriage. The article Attack of the Marriage Fraudsters! An examination of the Harper Government’s Anitmarriage Fraud Campaign by Megan Gaucher talks about how the campaign launched by the Harper government in the spring of 2011 to stop marriage frauds. It further mentions how this campaign can create implications for family class immigrants, and the author questions the justifications that the government has for creating the antimarriage fraud campaign.
The article uses seventy-three different databases to collect various methods and data, which have been gathered through media coverage, news releases, and statistics. Gaucher (2014) concludes that Canadian citizens have been seen as the innocent victims and the foreign spouses have been seen as the evil queue jumpers that are using marriage as a way to gain permanent residency in Canada. Further, Gaucher (2014) found that discourse primarily is targeting those from certain countries, and these are known as countries of suspicion, specially known as India and china because of their high rates of marriage frauds. The overall significance of Gaucher’s study was to show how the government has launched this campaign based on certain characteristics, but making it seem as if there is no backbone and its equal to all, yet certain countries and people are being targeted.
