Wayne Coffey’s main purpose in writing this book is to record the journey of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, focusing on their victory over the heavily favored Soviet Union team in what became one of the most iconic sports moments in history, “Miracle on Ice”. This book goes deeply into the team’s story, their friendship, their coach’s leadership, and the impact their victory had on American sports history. Coffey does an excellent job of illustrating the lives of the players leading up to the game and the change it had not only in the U.S., but the players that live afterwards. His main style throughout the book is storytelling, which he does in chronological order. He does a great job of talking about past events from a 3rd person point of view. The book is overall very organized, and Wayne also includes pictures throughout the book to give the reader a better illustration of what he is writing about. The Boys of Winter tells a true, in-depth story of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team and how they miraculously defeated the Soviet Union. Coffey retells the events surrounding the Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid, focusing on not just the victory itself, but the backgrounds, personalities, and the careers of the players and their coach, Herb Brooks. The Soviets had created the best hockey team to ever play the game, which was then defeated by the U.S. This game became instantly iconic in the 80s and was given the name “The Miracle on Ice”. Throughout the story, it provides detailed biographies of each team member, adding to the book with personal stories and the struggles that contributed to the team’s spirit. Overall, “The Boys”, of Winter is a story of teamwork, perseverance, and pride, capturing a moment when a young hockey team did the impossible to help the nation during a time of
