The author of the book “Piecing Me Together” Renee Watson was an educator, performer, and an author. Watson had 5 sibling, but she was youngest. She was born in New jersey, but grew up in Portland. She went to Jefferson school. When she was young ,her dream was to become a writer and she achieve her dream. She was always a confident student. She writes book for kids and teens. She worked as a teacher for more than 10 years. She taught at public schools. She got honored for many of her work. She got many awards. She is a really positive person. Watson specifically concern about how race and class impact opportunity and who gets what base on the class status. That we can see throughout the story. For instance, the main character Jade Butler is a black teenager girl who is starving to get opportunity. She wants to make something of her life. She is determined to achieve her goals, but achieving her goals living in her poor neighborhood because of the class and race differences. They have very few opportunities. In our society we give all the power to upper class. Therefore, Jade thinks the only way to achieve her dreams is to get out of her poor neighborhood. She said, "in order for me to make something of this life, I'd have to leave home, my neighborhood, my friends" (Watson). Basically she is saying that if she wants a better life. She has to erase her class identity, and start a new life where she can rebuild her life. Then Jade's Mother enrolled her in a white student based school,St. Francis which shows the theme that “class privilege” and the opportunities they get comparing to school in Jade’s neighborhood because Jade school is black race school. There they hardly have basic education need for students. This is the truth of our society even today. For instance, now we don’t have race segregated school for black or white, but we still have the private school. The private school kids with more opportunities than the public schools. This shows the class status because the private schools are very expensive, so if you are “rich” you can’t send your kids to these well known public schools. Therefore, they are held back from the success raceway before they enter. After Jade join the women to women program they got a chance go around to see.
