In 218 B.C.E in Rome women were in protest about a law that was passed. During the second Punic war with carthage in North Africa, Rome went through desperate circumstances. During this time the law that was passed that unsettled all the woman was the Oppian laws. This law restricted women’s use of luxury goods so to preserve resources for the war efforts. Men and women have lots of different roles that are specific to them, but there are roles women can do that a man would normally do and there are a lot of people that don 't think that is right and everyone should follow the typical stereotypes. Most people won 't accept that a woman can protect an man like in the story Mallam Sile. In the story Mallam Sile owns a tea shop and people are rude and cheat him all the time. He struggles to find a wife but as the story progresses and he is just about done building his new tea shop and he leaves for a little while and comes back with a wife who is much taller and bigger than he was.
Hardships can shape an individual’s ability to persevere through difficult times and act as barriers to one’s aspirations. A person who faces rough hardships will develop to become rigid and resilient through struggle, while an easily distracted individual may stray off course and be left behind. Judy Brady’s “I Want A Wife” is a revolutionary piece that attempted to reveal the unequal roles men and women held in society. She goes through her prose by listing all the responsibilities her wife must have and the ways to make her happy. Brady’s whole article is satirizing these roles and is, in general, very sarcastic in her tone. She mocks a society that has given women an impossible standard and she starts with the deprivation of her education then continues with the role her wife should play in domestic ways, and then finishes with the expectations the sexual aspects of their relationship.
