This has to be one of the strangest and most surprising facts I read in this book so far. Earlier in the book (before this passage), Schlosser explains that some slaughterhouse employees take methamphetamine. Methamphetamine is by definition, “a central nervous system stimulant, C 1 0 H 1 5 N, used clinically in the treatment of narcolepsy, hyperkinesia, and for blood pressure maintenance in hypotensive states: also widely used as an illicit drug,” (Dictionary.com). Schlosser warns it’s dangerous to take drugs, especially in a work environment.
