Have you ever felt that the earth is being cruel to you or a place around you? In Leonard Pitt's writing "sometimes the Earth is Cruel" describes what it is like after the earth has been cruel to a place. The theme of the article is humans will keep persevering even when this "bargain called life" is hard (Pitts par. 5). The earth was cruel to the Haitian people and they respond very well because humans are resilient and persevere. the Haitians had been through a lot leading up to the earthquakes "and a death toll officials cannot begin to even imagine" (Pitts par. 10). This shows that the earthquake was bad and that the officials did not even want to guess how many people were dead or how many houses fell through the earth. the Haitians went through a tremendous amount at the time of the earthquake. We all have those times where the earth is cruel or even where humans are cruel to others. Humans keep on persevering like what Pitts wrote "Dit out. Weep and mourn. Memorialize the dead, Rebuild. Go on"(par.14). This shows that humans move on and rebuild after a disaster. Humans always have to persevere no matter how bad the tragedy was we must move on. When Pitts says "Sometimes the earth is cruel" (par. 1). This is personification because the earth does not have a mind of its own. People sometimes feel that the earth is conspiring against them but the earth does not have a mind of its own so it cannot conspire against someone. A symbol in this article is "your arms are too short to box with god" (Pitts par. 12). Whale human arms are too short to box with god even if they were long enough we would still lose.
