“Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin is a short story that has many significant parts to it. The narrator gives readers insight on how his relationship with his brother was like, how his brother was suffering from a heroin addiction. The narrator also gives the readers insight on his own problems. Due to Sonny’s heroin addiction, he suffered quite a lot as what was implied in the story. The narrator implies and describes so many themes in this short story.
Sonny’s Blues, written by James Baldwin, is a story about the opposite lives of a troubled inner-city black teenager who struggles with addiction and the missing relationship with his brother. In the opening paragraphs it is apparent the brothers do not have a close relationship as the narrator says “He became real to me again” (Baldwin) as if Sonny is only an imaginative or elusive figure. While Sonny has a real and apparent addiction to heroin, for which he was incarcerated our narrator also struggles with an emotional imprisonment of his own. What can break the ice between our two characters and reunite the brotherly love which was lost so long ago? Imprisonment is a common theme throughout the story and we soon realize Sonny has been arrested and will be sent to prison.
Almost every passage in this book has something for the reader to learn about heaven and hell. Obviously the readers learn a lot from the various characters that are brought up throughout the book. However, the biggest thing for us to learn is the difference between heaven and hell. When the narrator starts in hell, it is a massive, seemingly infinite town full of miserable and aggravated people living terrible lives in a brutal setting. What many people think of when hell is mentioned is a huge setting full of fire and brutal living conditions where everything is suffering.

Sonny grew up in a family in Harlem, where he suffered drug addiction in his childhood. He attended military to escape drugs while he always dreamt to become a jazz musician. However, after the military, he returned to New York with his unchanged addiction. Due to touting and using heroin, he was arrested.
Author James Baldwin’s short story, Sonny’s Blues, takes place between 1924 - 1987 Harlem, New York, and society’s assumptions towards the black community and moral values during this time period were very skewed. Baldwin demonstrates this through the main characters, Sonny and the unnamed narrator, and their alienation from society because of their class and their alienation from themselves because of creed. These things have formed a metaphorical prison around them. In the 1900s Harlem, blacks were often in the middle or lower class, and Sonny and the narrator were no exception.

A good author can manipulate the narration to connect the audience to certain characters and deepen the reader’s understanding of their conflicts. In “Previous Condition” and “Sonny’s Blues,” James Baldwin illustrates themes of loneliness and isolation in the pursuit of finding a space that feels like home. Although this theme is clear in both stories, Baldwin is able to portray it very differently in each story through the relationship he allows the reader to the characters struggling with these feelings. While “Previous Condition” provides a more intimate relationship to the narrator, “Sonny’s Blues” is able to deliver an additional level of understanding by telling the story through Sonny’s brother, therefore disconnecting the reader in a way that forces him or her to share the characters’ feelings of isolation and confusion.
