Anastasia Elder in the article, “College Students’ Cell Phone Use, Beliefs, And Effects On Their Learning” 2013, explores cell phone usage by college students to determine the effects it has on routine tasks they perform. The author develops a series of tests for the students to conclude what impacts cell phone use has on the pupils. Anastasia Elder wants to investigate the impact phone usage has with pupils in order to understand the effects on learning, driving, studying, and opinions. This research is aimed at individuals who want to understand what impacts technology has on humans. I for one am very attracted to this research with curiosity and skepticism, I have for a long time wanted to see actual scientific data on how technology affects human behavior. Common knowledge would tell you that cellular phone usage is disruptive during important tasks, but does not prevent mass amounts of people from following the known cause and effects. For example, when driving a vehicle this causes accidents, when learning it will hinder retention, and finally when studying it is a distraction. The article does support some of my assumptions, “ Furthermore, their negative impact has been acknowledged in other areas, such as driving. In simulation experiments, drivers were slower to brake and had more traffic accidents while conversing on either handheld or hands-free cell phones compared to drivers not using a cell phone (Strayer, Drews, & Crouch, 2006), (Elder). I am somewhat surprised with the conclusion and results in the article, reported “on the 5 point scale indicating that college students were basically neutral in beliefs that cell phones are distracting to them.”(Elder).
