Essay 2 Intro: For most men, the ultimate goal in life is to be able to raise and support a family of your own. Having the ability to be a provider for the people you love and care about and having a good job that you enjoy is what the definition of the American dream is. Eddie Ahn, a South Korean man who was raised in Austin, Texas, has always wanted to achieve the American Dream. During his journey to achieve this, he encounters many challenges and tasks which ultimately leads him to learn very valuable life lessons. Eddie Ahn is the author of the book “Advocate”, which is a graphic memoir that tells us the upbringing and current life of Eddie. My biggest take away from the book Advocate is that you can be a good person, but you can't lose …show more content…
In this essay, I will explain how Eddie needs/tried to balance his family life and career with 4 very important examples and topics. The first being Career Passions, the second being Community and Responsibility, the third being Income and survival, and the fourth and last being Overworking and Selfcare. Paragraph 1 Firstly, I will be talking about how Eddie Ahn uses his career passions to become an Advocate. During Eddie's life, he was very confused on what he wanted to do to become someone. There was a lot of trial and error, as explained in the book. Growing up very poor and not having a lot of money was something that Eddie had to deal with. At first, Eddie worked at his parents liquor store until he went to Brown University to study political science. Unfortunately, Brown was not the best fit for Eddie as he did not like the cold environment and harsh racism at the school. …show more content…
Eddie has many helpful tips for us throughout his book. The one that stuck out to me the most was the Burrito math rule. Because Eddie has a family he needs to support and work at a non-profit company, money is a huge issue. Eddie created a math rule called the Burrito rule. He found out that a single burrito could last him 2 meals instead of one, saving him a lot of money. Eddie says that “Once I started eating five a week, I started measuring everything in burritos, one burrito was the same cost as a marker, and 4-5 burritos were the same cost as a tank of gas”. With the Burrito rule, Eddie was able to save up a lot of money and use it towards his family, and work supplies while still getting all the nutritious benefits. This is a way that helps mold Eddie into an advocate. Paragraph 4 Last but not least, Eddie uses Overworking and Self Care to become an advocate. Ever since Eddie was a child, all he knew was to work. This was a great benefit as he started his job because he was so used to overworking already. This was a huge pro that I noticed while reading this book. I also noticed how much of a con it could be to Eddie. As he was working so much, he started losing time with his family and was not able to see them as much as he wanted. This ate at Eddie mentally and physically as he was torn on what to do. Eddie loved his job and helping his community more than anything, but he also
